On last March 31st, 2000, Brembana Costruzioni Industriali signed a License Agreement with ABB Lummus Heat Transfer B.V., The Hague, Holland, for construction of Helixchangers® which are helically baffled shell and tube Heat Exchangers or any other equipment that utilizes helical baffles. Each baffle occupies about one quadrant of the cross section and has a certain inclination with the centerline of the Exchangers.
Successive baffles are arranged in such a way as to create continuous helical and near plug-flow conditions on the shell side.
Helically baffled cages can be configured single or double. The latter design incorporates two helical cages intertwined with each other, thereby reducing the unsupported tube span for large shell diameters and large helix angles.
The advantage of Helixchangers® is an increased heat transfer rate/pressure drop ratio, reduced investment cost, reduced fouling, reduced vibration and reduced maintenance.
All these advantages can be further enhanced with complimentary technologies such as tube inserts and low finned tubes. This latter combination is called Helifin®
